UEFA has unveiled the logo and the visual identity for the UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ tournament in Finland as well as confirming dates and host cities for the event between 23 August and 10 September next year.

Dynamic, stylish and energetic
"A creation of The Works, the United Kingdom-based design and branding agency, the new logo picks up on the form and structure of the UEFA European Women's Championship trophy to create a dynamic, stylish and energetic logo," said UEFA on Tuesday.

Passion, pride and new dawn
The colour palette usage, from light yellow to dark orange, encompasses passion, pride and a sense of a new dawn within the competition. At the same time, the heritage and prestigious past of this tournament is maintained via the use of the distinctive UEFA arch. Beneath the main graphic element and the tournament wording, the host country staging the finals is also referenced, in this case "FINLAND 2009".

Strong growth
"The new UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ logo captures perfectly the dynamic growth of women's football," said tournament director, Outi Saarinen. "After Finland reached the semi-finals of UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2005™ in England, women's football here has been growing strongly. I am sure this new visual identity will help to promote the final tournament throughout our country long before the tournament actually kicks off in August 2009."

Brand design
UEFA said: "Future UEFA European Women's Championship final rounds will utilise the same logo, although each time with a personalised brand design highlighting the features of the hosts." The finals field has been increased from eight to 12 teams, reflecting the importance bestowed on European women's football by UEFA, which recently moved the women's game into its professional football sphere of activities.

Host cities and dates
As far as venues and dates are concerned, the 7th UEFA European Women's Championship will be played in four cities; the capital Helsinki, Tampere, Turku and Lahti. The settings for the matches will be the Olympic Stadium and Töölö Stadium in Helsinki, Kupittaa Stadium in Turku, Tampere's Ratina Stadium and Lahti Sport Centre. The exact match schedule will be announced in due course, once the qualifying games have finished in October 2008.
