DTS Logo Evolution

Our corporate logo enables us to speak with a unique voice. It is the standard that sets us apart, and it is the expression that articulates our corporate vision. Our logos consist of three elements locked together: the symbol, the DTS wordmark and the identifier line. Color plays an important role in communicating our brand’s personality. The primary colors of orange, yellow, black and gray are dynamic, actionable, vibrant colors to help describe the DTS brand.

The Symbol:
This dynamic symbol is the defining feature of our design system. It is inspired by science and sound waves to reinforce the DTS brand.

Wordmark:
Taken from the old DTS logo, this wordmark has been modernized yet retains its brand heritage. The look is bold and cutting-edge, like the DTS product.

Identifier Line:
This line sums up what DTS is about. It can take on many forms depending on what the product or service is, or which division the logo is identifying.

WWF’s world renowned panda logo was designed by its founder chairman, the naturalist and painter Sir Peter Scott, in 1961. It was then that WWF-UK, the first national organisation in the WWF international network, was started.

The WWF logo has 77 per cent prompted awareness in the UK (Mori poll, August 2001)

The WWF logo has an immensely appealing and positive image, which is seen as caring, responsible and credible. This in turn means an inherent emotional and commercial value is attached to the use of our logo, reflecting our appeal and values.WWF’s name and logo can be used as a powerful product differentiation tool. Afterevaluation, WWF may allow an organisation to use the name and logo under four circumstances:

when the product directly supports our work by being at the leading edge of sustainable design;

• when WWF enters a full partnership with an organisation, promoting a product which
meets many different organisational goals and objectives;
• when the business has donated money to support our work; or
• when a company product generates income for WWF from licence royalties.

The text accompanying the logo will clearly state the nature of the relationship in order to maintain consistency, credibility and transparency. In accordance with the Charities Act, the commercial nature of any partnership has to be stated for public information. Unless otherwise stated, a business and industry relationship with WWF is not in itself an endorsement of a company or its products. It is, of course, essential that in any business relationship, WWF retains its integrity and identity

As the products sold in the WWF-UK Trading Catalogue fall within the scope of Panda
branding, they are also subject to environmental procurement criteria. The catalogue is a prime means of reaching a mass audience.

When the patented name "Mercedes" was registered in September 1902 Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft had a successful brand name but still lacked a characteristic trademark. Then Paul and Adolf Daimler - the company founder’s two sons, and now in charge of the business - remembered that their father had once used a star as a symbol.

Gottlieb Daimler had been technical director of the Deutz gas engine factory from 1872 until 1881. At the beginning of his employment there, he had marked a star above his own house on a picture postcard of Cologne and Deutz, and had written to his wife that this star would one day shine over his own factory to symbolize prosperity.

The DMG board immediately accepted the proposal and in June 1909, both three-pointed and four-pointed stars were registered as trademarks. Although both designs were legally protected, only the three-pointed star was used. From 1910 onwards it began to appear at the front of the cars as a design feature on the radiator.

The three-pointed star was supposed to symbolize Daimler’s ambition of universal motorization – “on land, on water and in the air”. Over the years, various small additions were made. In 1916, the points were surrounded by a circle, in which four small stars and the word Mercedes were integrated, or alternatively the names of the DMG plants at Untertürkheim or Berlin-Marienfelde.

In November 1921, DMG applied for legal protection of utility patents for any new variations on their trademark and lodged with the patent office a three-dimensional three-pointed star enclosed in a circle – which included the design intended for use on the radiator grille. It became a registered trademark in August 1923.

The period of inflation after the First World War meant a difficult time for sales – especially of luxury goods such as passenger cars – and had serious repercussions on the automobile industry. Only financially strong companies with well-established models were able to survive – although even these were forced into mergers and co-operative ventures. It was in this way that the former rivals, DMG and Benz & Cie., formed a syndicate in 1924 in order to standardize design and production, as well as purchasing, sales and advertising, and thereby remain competitive.

During this period, the two firms generally marketed their products jointly, although still under separate trademarks. Two years later, in June 1926, the two oldest motor manufacturers merged to form Daimler-Benz AG.

At this point a new trademark was designed, which brought together the main characteristics of both the existing emblems – the world renowned three-pointed star belonging to Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft was surrounded with its trade name ‘Mercedes’ as well as that of the equally famous name ‘Benz’, whose laurel wreath entwined the two names together.

This trademark, which has changed little over the decades, still adorns Mercedes-Benz vehicles and has come to represent quality and safety on roads everywhere. And throughout the world the name Mercedes-Benz is synonymous with tradition, innovation and the future of the automobile.

PayPal’s new logo is not that different than from its old one, but it’s still a change that might confuse many users. It can also lead to many exploitations by scammers. I personally believe companies like PayPal who deal with online money transfer should not change their identity often, especially the logo.

Because when it comes to online money handling, people are very serious and cautious about their money, if not scared. Therefore they want to make sure that, their money is in secure hands. People also want to see a stable company. So when the company changes their identity often (especially if the new logo looks worse than the previous one) it might send a wrong message to its customers. People can get the perception that the company is not reliable.

Therefore corporate identity change is a tricky business, especially for online money transfer sites like paypal.

PayPal has redesigned its logo and is auctioning off its old logo for charity. The auction is actually for the large sign that had hung in the lobby of the PayPal offices in San Jose. One-hundred percent of the final sale price will support Natural Resources Defense Council

Our company logo represents a child embarking on a journey on the back of a bird. It works as a metaphor, and encapsulates the nature of mapping and exploration.

The child sees the ground below with new eyes; the perception is of a map with all the real details of life. The Tele Atlas brand is broad in outlook, global and far-sighted. It expands into experience, knowledge, and the search for new territories.

The Tele Atlas logo was derived from the artwork of a well-known book, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils. First published in 1906, the story follows the adventures of a mischievous 14-year old who is transformed into a tiny being, transported across the Swedish countryside on the back of a goose, and learns about nature, climate, geography, culture, and the importance of friendship, tolerance, and the belief in a good world.

Author Selma Lagerlöf was the first Swedish writer and the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Her classic book, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, has been translated into more than 30 languages and is an all-time favorite in Nordic countries.

HISTORY OF THE LOGO

The ARM & HAMMER symbol was first used in the early 1860’s by James A. Church, the son of Dr. Austin Church, one of the founders of our business. James A. Church operated a spice and mustard business known as the Vulcan Spice Mills. In Roman mythology, Vulcan, the god of fire, was especially skilled in fashioning ornaments and arms for the gods and heroes. The ARM & HAMMER symbol, therefore, represented the arm of Vulcan with hammer in hand about to descend on an anvil.

In 1867, when James A. Church joined his father as a member of Church & Co., he brought along the ARM & HAMMER trademark. He began to use it on some of the baking soda packages that were being sold under various name labels. After a period of time, more people requested the package with the ARM & HAMMER symbol on it than all others and the ARM & HAMMER brand became our primary brand.

Originally used exclusively on our baking soda packages, the trademark now identifies an array of quality consumer and specialty products in use throughout the world. Today Church & Dwight Co., Inc., strives to continue its tradition of providing products of high quality and performance that meet genuine consumer needs.

History of the Sun Life brand

Since the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada was chartered in 1874, the company has continually evolved towards its vision to be an international leader in protection and wealth management. Our visual representation or logo has also evolved throughout the last 130 years, to today’s commanding sun and earth logo, first introduced in 2000. We invite you to see how Sun Life’s visual identity has evolved to the brand it represents today.

Sun and earth
In 2000, the company introduced Sun Life Financial – to represent our continuing evolution from a life insurance provider to a select group of companies offering a range of products and services designed to meet our customers' lifetime financial needs. At the centre of this identity is a symbol of a globe combined with the sun. The sun is a powerful universal symbol with a unique focus on growth, excellence and integrity. The globe symbolizes international reach and speaks to diversity.

Sunburst "S"
After a 1984 review of the company's logo, the firm of Stewart and Morrison designed Sun Life’snew corporate symbol. The new symbol was introduced at the 1986 annual general meeting by former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas M. Galt. His comments at the introduction are as follows "as the Sun Life family of companies has grown through increased numbers of subsidiaries and as we have changed and developed our marketing of new products and distribution systems, it is appropriate to have a new, up-to-date symbol to represent our family relationship and remind our people and clients of our common purpose. The new symbol brings together in graphic design the first letter of our name with a picture of the sun, the nurturer and protector of life."

Stylized “u” and “n”
This stylized SunLife logo was developed by Ingalls Associates – Sun Life's United States advertising agency. Originally used only in the United States (c.1974), its modified Futura Bold type quickly caught on in both Canada and Britain and gradually replaced the Tree of Life symbol. The final switch was effective in 1984, the same year of the opening of Sun Life's new corporate headquarters – the Sun Life Centre. The new logo was considered more effective because it contained the use of the entire Sun Life name as a logo. It was thought that The Tree of Life did not identify the company strongly enough and the points of its rays were difficult to reproduce in small sizes.

Tree of Life
The Tree of Life logo, used on all of the company's printed material and signage, was created by Montreal designer, Allan Harrison. Comments made by Mr. Harrison at the time of its introduction: "The sun is universally accepted as a positive generating force in life. Without the sun, man could not live. To relate this fact to the services of the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada became the task." He succeeded in creating a symbol which connotes the sun and differs from the many other sun symbols used commercially.

Sun Life head office building, Montreal
This variation of a graphic of the Sun Life head office building shows how it appeared on letterhead circa 1954. The building has an interesting history – most notably the preparations and activities surrounding the secret storage of British securities in its 3rd basement during World War II.

Head office building, Montreal
The image of our head office building in Montreal succeeded the sun rising image on all of our printed material. The design was produced by Austin Wright of the company's Sales Promotion Division shortly after the war. The head office building was the largest office building in the British Empire; the original section and 1st extension having been completed in 1918 and 1926 respectively. Variations of the building's image such as the one shown here, were used in all of our printed material for a 20-year period.

Sun in cloud with buckle
This logo, featuring a buckle surrounding the rising sun was used on a variety of the company's printed material – anything from internal publications to agents' contracts. The use of this emblem was discontinued during World War II because of its similarity to that of Japan's national emblem, both in color and in design.

Sun over mountains
The logo was used on a variety of our printed material including annual reports, product pamphlets and internal publications. In early variations, the logo often included the slogan "Prosperous and Progressive." This slogan was discontinued, however, as a result of economic conditions experienced during the years following the Great Depression.

Sun through the clouds
The logo features a variation of the "Sun Rising and Sun Life's date of incorporation." The Sun rising through clouds was one of the first designs to be used in the company's printed material. The symbol by itself (without date) was pressed into the gold seal at the bottom of all Sun Life policies from 1890 until policies were printed by computers in the 1960s.

Rising sun
The "Sun Rising" motif was presented in various forms on the company's letterhead and policy mastheads through the years. This specific style appeared on a 1903 letter written by the company's General Manager in Great Britain.

Phaeton and the chariot of the sun
According to T.B. Macaulay's 1893 trademark registration renewal letter, he writes, "The said specific trademark consists of a chariot drawn by horse, and driven by a driver, with the rays proceeding from the rear of said chariot, the whole intended to represent the classical legend of Phaeton and the Chariot of the Sun, and I hereby request the said specific trademark to be registered in accordance with the law."

2010 FIFA World Cup™ - Official Emblem

The 2010 identity is unique, vibrant and dynamic, graphically encapsulating the African continent while more intimately dipping into South Africa's rich and colourful heritage for inspiration. The graphic figure strikes a resemblance to the earliest rock art paintings for which our country is also famous. This figure is caught in mid-action performing a bicycle kick - a style of play that captures the flair of African football.

The figure is lucid, energetic and indirectly illustrates an inherent passion for the beautiful game. It is kicking a football upwards - an invitation from Africa to other nations of the world to join the game.

The actual ball is a modern representation of a football, suggesting that it belongs to FIFA. And for the first time ever, this ball that has traveled across the globe will touch African soil.

The colourful backdrop behind the figure represents the South African national flag. The ‘swishes' extend upwards, from south to north, reaching out to the world. They embody the energy, diversity and fiery passion of our country, and they symbolise the rise of the rainbow nation.

The typeface is an original creation. It reflects our personality and reinforces the idea that in South Africa we do things uniquely. It is playful, naïve and free-spirited. It is also bold, welcoming and friendly.

The logo is celebratory in nature and energetic in its feel.

Evolution of Apple Logo

Here i shall discuss the evolution of Apple's Logo which has by far been the most revered. I shall analyse importance of each of these logos some time again in my later logos.

Mac

It is one of the biggest consumer electronics and Software Company, best known for products like Macintosh, iPod and iphone. Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne had together setup Apple in 1976, to sell their hand-built computer Apple I. They had offered their product to HP first but were declined by them. I think HP would still be regretting this today.

The road to success wasn’t easy for Apple, and Wayne liquidated his share in the company for a mere $ 800. After the launch of Apple II in 1977, things started to look up for Apple and we all know what heights the company has reached since then.

Apple II was successful mainly because it had colored graphics. Great and simple design, has always been the USP (Unique Selling Proposition) for Apple, and their logo is no exception. When Apple was started, the logo was a complicated picture of Isaac Newton sitting under a tree. This had been designed by Jobs and Wayne, with the inscription: “Newton … A Mind Forever Voyaging Through Strange Seas of Thought … Alone.” Frankly, I don’t think it was just a coincidence that Apple had slow sales during this period.

However, Steve Jobs hired Rob Janoff to simplify the logo, which turned out to be a great idea. Rob created the ‘Rainbow Apple’ which was the logo for company till 1998. There are many rumors as to why Rob had chosen to create such a logo. One of them says that the Apple was a tribute to Newton (discovery of gravity from an Apple), and since the USP for Apple at that time was colored graphics, it had the rainbow colors. Another explanation exists that the bitten apple pays homage to the Mathematician Alan Turing, who committed suicide by eating an apple he had laced with cyanide. Turing is regarded as the father of computers. The rainbow colors of the logo are rumored to be a reference to the rainbow flag, as homage to Turing’s homosexuality.

Janoff, however, said in an interview that though he was mindful of the “byte/bite” pun (Apple’s slogan back then: “Byte into an Apple”), he designed the logo as such to “prevent the apple from looking like a cherry tomato.”

When Apple launched the new iMac in 1998, they changed their logo to a monochromatic apple logo, almost identical to the rainbow logo. Now, the Apple logo comes with nice gradient chrome silver design. It is one of the most recognized brand symbols in the world today, and the shape is what identifies the company more than the color.
